Overload protection in manual hoists: how it works

A load limiter reduces the risk of lifting a load above the hoist's permitted working load. It is an additional safeguard and does not replace load calculations, WLL markings or pre-use inspection.

Operating principle

Depending on its design, the limiter may slip or disengage the drive when a preset force is reached. The operator finds that further lifting is prevented, while lowering normally remains possible.

The exact setting depends on the model and manufacturer. Adjusting it without instructions and test equipment can make the protection ineffective.

Checks before use

  • legible identification and a WLL suitable for the load weight
  • condition of the chain, hooks, latches and housing
  • brake operation without a load
  • absence of chain twists and side loading
  • current inspection status

If the limiter operates

Do not increase the force with extension handles or attempt to bypass the mechanism. Lower the load, check its weight and the sling arrangement, then select a hoist with suitable capacity and allowance.
